Michigan Regulators Suspend Online Betting CompanyMichigan regulators continue cracking down on online gaming operators not in line with state law, and that included issuing a suspension order against Churchill Downs Technology Initiatives Company last week.

Churchill, which operates the famous track of the same name that’s home to the Kentucky Derby, has been operating the TwinSpires horse race betting app in the state. However, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) issued a suspension order for violations of Michigan’s gaming laws and the Horse Racing Law of 1995.

“The suspension order stems from the licensee’s continued operation of advance deposit wagering (ADW) despite being issued a formal order requiring such activity cease for Michigan residents,” the MGCB noted.

Details On The Case

The regulator noted that the state’s Horse Racing Law of 1995 stipulated that simulcast and ADW wagering must be tied to a live racing meet and a licensed track. There are currently no tracks in Michigan licensed to conduct live horse racing, so ADW is prohibited.

“For ADW providers to legally offer these wagers, a track license must first be approved by the MGCB,” the Control Board said.

Advance Deposit Wagering allows bettors to fund an online account and then place bets at tracks around the country.

On Dec. 23, the MGCB has also asked three other businesses using ADW – Xpressbet, NYRAbets, and TVG Network – to also suspend operations in the state. Only TwinSpires failed to comply and MGCB says the company is violating state law.

The state has requested a virtual hearing before an administrative law judge to determine whether the suspension should continue, or if other fines and penalties should be imposed.

Online wagering remains popular in the Wolverine State and that included a record revenue month in November. The state offers online casinos, poker, and sports betting, but it looks like horse racing betting will be off the menu for now.
